A most requested blog post: my favorite cake tools! Whether you’re about to frost your first cake or you’re an old cake decorating pro, having the right tools makes a world of difference! Believe me, this past year I’ve decorated over 100 cakes, and made it my mission to try as many tools as I could. Some were amazing, and some were…not.
So in this post I’m sharing my very favorite cake tools that I’ve found, how I use them, and where you can find them! And if you’re looking for some cake recipe inspiration, you can check out my cake recipes here!
These are by far my favorite cake pans! They bake really evenly, which means more moist and delicious cakes! A good cake pan makes a huge difference! I usually bake my cakes in three 6″ layers!
My Favorite Cake Scraper For Smooth Sides
This is my favorite tried-and-true scraper for smooth cake sides! I have tried a ton of different cake scrapers, across a wide range of price points. I’ve tried some really expensive ones that were sadly disappointing, and I keep returning to this one! I love that it’s 10 inches tall, so it’s the perfect size for all of my tall cakes, and works great for shorter cakes too. A good scraper is top of my favorite cake tools list, because I use it for almost every single cake I make!
Favorite Frosting/Decorating Tips Set
I bought this set when I first started decorating cakes and it seriously has everything you need, and is way less expensive than kits with a ton of tips you may never use! Here’s what I use most often:
Squeeze Bottles For Drip Cakes
I can’t tell you how amazing these squeeze bottles are for drip cakes! Whenever I post a cake decorating video on Instagram I’m always asked about it! I love it because you have so much more control over the drip. And the top of the bottle is very secure – so important! I once used a cheap squeeze bottle and the top completely popped off and chocolate poured alllll over my perfectly frosted cake. I literally cried, and have never used any bottles other than these since haha!
I loooove these cake discs! They make smooth sides on cakes way easier. You center the cake in the middle of the disc, frost to the edge of the disc (I use the 6.25 inch discs for my 6 inch cakes because I don’t like a ton of frosting and I find them to be perfect). Then you smooth the sides using the outside of the disc as your guide. This makes your frosting perfectly even around the whole cake, and also makes it 100 times easier to get smooth sides.
This is the tool I use to get all the frosting onto the top and sides of my cake. I tried to use a normal spatula when I first started decorating cakes, and it worked, but it was way trickier. If you plan to decorate more than one cake in your life (which you probably do since you’re reading this!), I recommend grabbing one! You won’t regret it!
A life changing tool! This turntable moves so smoothly, and makes frosting cakes a total breeze! I really like that it has a bit of height to it too, so your cake is closer to eye level.
My Favorite Food Dyes For Cakes
When it comes to dying frosting, gel food dye is the only way to go! Liquid food coloring will change the consistency of your frosting, which we do not want! This kit has the most common colors I use, and a little bit goes a long way! I’ve had this same kit for years, and just replace colors as I go through them!
Sweetapolita sprinkles are my absolute favorite! They’re such good quality (an example of getting what you pay for!), and their sprinkle medleys are so pretty! I really love that the big sprinkles are actually chocolate, so they’re soft and delicious! You can use code CAKESINBLOOM15 for 15% off your order if you’d like!
Those are my most used cake tools! If you have any questions about any of these, or want recommendations on other tools leave me a comment below and I’d love to chat about it! You can also find me on Instagram (@thiscelebratedlife), and send me a direct message!
